Wizard Class Guide

Wizard is the AoE and control caster in The Adventurers. Magic damage scales with Resolve, and 1.0 adds a 25% magic damage bonus on that stat. Energy is the same pool: ten energy per Resolve point. You are on the default start with Paladin and Cleric. Custom can still drop Wizard if you want a physical-only opener, but you will miss Fireball’s cluster clear the first time three enemies share adjacent hexes.

Wizard is not a healer. Life Drain converts enemy health to healing energy, and Mystic Barrier grants temporary health to other allies in range, but the job is still to stun, freeze, blind, ignite, and detonate. Fireball in 1.0 has explosion VFX and hits all adjacent targets — play it like a bomb, not a single-target bolt. Staff Weapon Mastery exists on the general list if you hold a staff. For spacing, combat. For lineups, party comps and the tier list.

Role and primary stats

Role: back-to-mid caster, area damage, and turn manipulation. Frost Nova is an ice bolt with a stun chance. Freeze Target and Ice Storm lock groups. Time Warp speeds an ally’s next turn. Phase Shift is the panic button: temporarily reduce all damage by 100% for the caster. You want Paladin or Warrior on the first rank so you never have to spend Phase Shift on a routine poke.

Primary stat: Resolve (energy and magic). Secondary: Vitality so one stray hit does not dump you. Tertiary: Agility only if you are tired of being the first target to lose initiative. Strength does nothing for Missiles.

Signature abilities by level

Default — Frost Nova (Action). Ice bolt with a chance to stun. Open with this on the caster or the runner you cannot let act.

Level 2. Missiles (Action) fires 3 separate magic projectiles at the target. Fireball (Action) conjures a fireball hitting all adjacent targets; 1.0 gives it a visible explosion. Arcane Shield (Bonus) is a magic shield granting temporary health for the caster. Missiles is single-target chip. Fireball is the cluster tax. Arcane Shield is why Wizard can survive one mistake.

Level 4. Energy Drain (Action) converts enemy health to energy. Chain Lightning (Action) shocks all enemies adjacent to each other, max 4 enemies. Ice Armor (Bonus) reduces all damage by 25%. Energy Drain is how a Resolve-heavy Wizard refuels mid-fight. Chain Lightning is the other cluster tool — it wants a chain of adjacent hexes, not a perfect Fireball pile.

Level 6. Ignite (Action) sets a target on fire, taking damage at end of turn. Freeze Target (Action) freezes a target. Blind (Bonus) surrounds the target in darkness, reducing block, dodge, and parry chances by 50%. Freeze is hard control. Blind is the setup for Paladin Smite Evil or Archer Aimed Shot. Ignite is the DoT you apply when you cannot spend a full Fireball this turn.

Level 8. Lightning Bolt (Action) conjures a lightning bolt. Ice Storm (Action) conjures an ice storm hitting all adjacent targets with a chance to stun. Phase Shift (Bonus) temporarily reduces all damage by 100% for the caster. Ice Storm is the stun-flavored cluster spell. Phase Shift is not an attack; it is the turn you refuse to die so Cleric can Mend Wounds next.

Level 10. Life Drain (Action) converts enemy health to healing energy. Time Warp (Action) speeds up an ally’s next turn. Mystic Barrier (Bonus) is a magic shield granting temporary health for other allies in range. Late Wizard is a tempo caster: Time Warp the Paladin’s Sacred Blade turn, Barrier the front rank, then Fireball or Ice Storm the leftover clump.

Positioning

One rank behind the Paladin or Warrior, not on the back wall if that puts Fireball out of range, and not adjacent to the enemy’s melee if you can help it. Chain Lightning wants a line or knot of adjacent enemies; do not scatter them with a Paladin Blinding Light unless you already got the lightning off. Phase Shift is personal — it does not save Cleric. If someone is walking at you, Freeze Target or Frost Nova, do not step forward to “help” tank.

Party fit

Default trio is already Wizard’s best advertisement: Paladin holds, Cleric heals living allies, you delete clumps. Adding Warrior gives a second front hex for even denser Fireball bait. Archer should Mark the leftover officer after your AoE, not compete for the same cluster. Thief Hamstring keeps a runner inside your storm. Druid and Warlock also spend energy heavily; two summoners plus Wizard can empty three Resolve bars in one round — pick one hungry caster if the fights are long.

Wizard is honest: unmatched at clustered maps, wasteful on isolated officers, and dead if the front rank folds. It is the default-start reason many players never learn Archer until Custom. If you hate managing energy, this is not your class — Quick Breaths and Never Tired are almost required generals.

General ability suggestions

Quick Breaths doubles all energy recovered, including in combat. Never Tired starts combat at at least 50% energy. Mental Toughness adds 15% magic resistance. Weapon Mastery Staff adds 10% damage with a quarterstaff or staff. Enduring Aura adds one round to incoming buffs, which helps Arcane Shield and Ice Armor feel less stingy. Scout if this Wizard is also reading resistances. Skip Berserker and Two Hands Better Than One.

See the Characters Hub for the rest of the eight. If you kept the default start, your next read is Cleric so you stop treating Life Drain as a heal plan.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about The Adventurers tactical RPG.

What does Wizard scale with in 1.0?

Resolve for energy (10 per point) and magic damage, with a 1.0 bonus of +25% magic damage on Resolve. Vitality buys health (10 per point) so one hit does not end you.

Is Wizard a default starting class?

Yes. The default start is Paladin, Wizard, and Cleric. Custom can replace Wizard with any other class.

How does Fireball work in 1.0?

Fireball hits all adjacent targets and has explosion VFX in 1.0. It is a cluster spell, not a single-target bolt. Chain Lightning instead shocks a chain of adjacent enemies, max four.

Is Wizard a healer?

No. Life Drain converts enemy health to healing energy, and Mystic Barrier gives other allies temporary health, but Cleric is the premier healer. Wizard is AoE and control.

What is Phase Shift?

Level 8 bonus: temporarily reduce all damage by 100% for the caster. It saves the Wizard, not the party. Time Warp, by contrast, speeds an ally's next turn.

Which general abilities fit Wizard?

Quick Breaths, Never Tired, Mental Toughness, and Weapon Mastery Staff. See combat for energy timing.
